JUDE THADDAEUS

PATRON SAINT OF DESPERATE CAUSES

Feast day October 28

Jude Thaddaeus, the brother of Simon (who has the same feast day), was the son of Mary Cleopas, the wife of Alpheus. One of the twelve apostles of Christ, he is the man who questioned Jesus at the Last Supper. We read in the Gospel of John that Jude asked: “Lord, why dost Thou manifest Thyself to us, and not to the world?” And Jesus replied: “Those who love me shall keep my word, and my Father will love them, and we shall come and dwell with them.”

After the Ascension, the apostle Thomas sent Jude Thaddaeus to Abgar, king of Edessa. Jude cured the king of leprosy and afterward departed with his brother Simon for Mesopotamia, then Persia, where he baptized “more than sixty thousand men, the king and the princes among them, and not counting the little children.” When they arrived in Sumeria, the two apostles confronted the pagan preachers and were then martyred. To honor the holy men, the King of Edessa had a church built in their name.

In the United States, Jude Thaddaeus was often worshipped by recent immigrants from Europe during the 1920s, especially in the Chicago area. He is the patron saint of the Chicago Police Department.
